Executive Leadership in the 21st Century

Executive Leadership

Executive leadership definition has not changed; it is the ability of those who manage or direct employees in an organization to influence and guide these individuals. The focus and approach has changed.

Leadership in the twentieth century was focused on directive, top-down management. It was based on positional power, the executive leader was the boss. Companies learned to rely on and effectively use technology during 2020. People changed their perceptions of careers and the workplace. Command-driven leadership is no longer as effective.

Mark Cannon, Professor at Vanderbilt, definition reflects a shift in the approach to leadership in business. Executive leadership is managing ourselves to make the most of our capabilities in evolving circumstances, “Part of executive leadership is better enabling employees to lead themselves,” Cannon explains. “It is about leveraging what you can do as a leader by thinking beyond yourself. You maximize what others have to offer and deliver the best outcome.”

Executive leadership in the 21st Century requires a more human approach. It requires creating a workplace that provides more flexibility for employees to do their jobs, and where employees and the company can flourish and succeed. Making corporate decisions based upon past data or past experiences helped predict outcomes in times of certainty. Making decisions when unpredictable events disrupt multiple aspects of “business as normal” requires leaders to develop strategies without seeing all possible options. In the 21st Century company leaders need agility to navigate economic disruptions and rapid change.

Leaders at the executive level need to prioritize their own leadership development in order to assess the best course of action based on self-knowledge. Changing an established mindset and approach is challenging. Business coaches, webinars, workshops and courses are available to facilitate this shift in the approach to executive leadership.

Madison and Montana Marzario

Madison and Montana

Madison and Montana Marzario story of what inspired them to enter the cannabis industry begins like most women’s stories, with a health crisis. Sisters, Madison and Montana learned first hand there was nothing natural that could help with all the trauma that comes with a head injury.

Montana grew up as a competitive ski racer and eventually competed at a D1 level. She was an All-Star and Athlete of the Year for the Alpine skiing team at the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy in Colorado…She had 11 top-five finishes in FIS events in 2014-15, including a first-place finish in the National Junior Slalom race in December 2014. After suffering from an injury, she came across CBD, this is when she gained the passion and desire to give people more knowledge about it.

During this time, she earned a double major in Business and Economics. at St. Lawrence University, providing her with the framework and passion to open a company. After seeing incredible and promising benefits from CBD, Madison and Montana knew they needed to share this discovery with others. This is when the Care Division was created, based on a mission to create the highest quality products and an affordable price.

Inspired by traditional herbalism, utilizing modern science with development in a CGMP facility, Care Division creates all of their products using pure CBD isolate sourced and processed in Colorado. Care Division formulas are designed to enhance the effects of hemp by blending it with synergistic compounds from plants, nootropics, and nutraceuticals while ensuring affordability.

“Care Division tinctures are handcrafted to enhance the effects of THC and CBD by pairing them with synergistic compounds from other herbal extracts, nootropics, and nutraceuticals. Our products aren’t about getting you high, we are trying to improve your quality of life. Not your standard tincture.”

FYI:  Montana’s favorite Care Division product is the Dream tincture.

Madison was first introduced to the legal Cannabis industry in 2011 when her parents became owners/operators in the legal Colorado market. This early exposure to navigating the emerging legal cannabis ignited her passion for industry.  Madison began her career by disrupting the market with a product line focused specifically on health and wellness, Care Division. She had played on her high school ice hockey team and was aware of the chronic pain endured by active adults. Madison and Montana understand the importance of high quality, effective, natural pain relief. Care Division has become one of the most reputable brands based on their innovation, transparency and partnerships with several Doctors, Professional Sports Teams and pharmacies.

Madison co-founded Wyldfire Concentrates in Colorado with the same goal in mind, quality, and affordability.  Wyldfire Concentrates became the first female-owned/operated extraction company in the state of Colorado with an emphasis on proceeds towards wildfire containment in the state.

Wyldfire Concentrates was founded  in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with a mission to help the Forest Service prevent and remediate wildfires.  In doing so, Wyldfire proceeds benefit National Forests and Firefighter Relief Funds. Protect the forest we all love, smoke Wyldfire.”

Their state-of-the-art facilities located in Colorado and Michigan are equipped with the highest grade machinery, including closed-loop-hydrocarbon systems, proprietary techniques and high production standards. Wyldfire Concentrates pride themselves on producing clean, high potency, flavorful concentrates with the highest quality starting material and cannabis-derived terpenes to ensure a smooth draw, however, you consume. Wyldfire Concentrates contain no additives, such as MCT Oil or Vitamin E Derivatives and are thoroughly tested to ensure potency and the absence of any harmful compounds.

Madison’s relationships and experience led her to start her own consulting company, Vedas Consulting.  Since launching Vedas Consulting, Madison has supported over 30 unique licenses, including cultivation, manufacturing, and retail.  Her projects have consisted of, SPACs, acquisitions, lease agreements, Cannabis real estate buy/sell, internal audits, granted license to operate, Metrc/POS training, compliance, SOPs, restructuring business models, license buying/selling and more. Madison continues to expand their brands in multiple states while encouraging those who are less familiar in the industry to seek her support.

Both Madison and Montana Marzario embody the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to creating cannabis products and companies built on integrity. Madison echoes the sentiments of other young women in the cannabis industry –

“We are a female-founded, locally owned and operated company,” Madison said. “This is our whole life. I used to work in a corporate office and Montana graduated from an amazing college with connections to work anywhere. We took a risk to jump into this industry because we believe in it. We’re a family that’s built our health and lifestyle around these products.”

Stephanie Kronen Women Cultivating Success

Stephanie Kronen Curaleaf

One of the most frequent questions is “how do you start a career in the cannabis industry?”.  Stephanie Kronen, the Director of Marketing at Curaleaf SE, knows the answer.

Stephanie’s interest and career path has focused on women wellness, developing education and outreach programs, business development and strategic partnerships.

She is the former founder and president of a television production company. The company produced a nationally syndicated women’s health series in a joint venture with International Management Group and Trans World International. During her career with Publicis Touchpoint Solutions she provided training and education to pharmaceutical representatives on behalf of multiple products for medical conditions. Stephanie Kronen received multiple Service Star Awards for exceeding expectations and providing exemplary service. Her business accomplishments and career were well established. Stephanie’s career and future were secure. What motivated or inspired her to make a major career and life change to work in the cannabis industry?

Like so many in the cannabis industry it was about wellness, and educating and helping others achieve a better quality of life through better health. It wasn’t her own journey through pain and disability that inspired her to enter the cannabis industry. (Stephanie’s future in pro tennis ended abruptly when multiple shoulder surgeries left her with permanent nerve damage and trigeminal neuralgia. She was also diagnosed with an auto-immune disease.)

It was her cousin’s deteriorating physical and mental health.

I got started in the cannabis industry because of my cousin, who is more like a brother to me. He had several major back surgeries that left him disabled in his mid-twenties. He was taking 50+ pills a day from morphine to muscle relaxers, along with anti-anxiety and depression pills. The combination made him suicidal, obese and left him with zero quality of life. When medical cannabis became legal in CT where he resided at the time, he began experimenting. After about 18 months, I saw him lose 200 lbs, get on an airplane for the first time in 20 years to visit me, find his smile and have the desire to have the best life possible. Although he will always be on disability, he works out every day, has since moved to Florida and we took him for his first Margarita at a restaurant in 25 years.

Stephanie’s cousin’s experience with medical cannabis made her passionate about the medical cannabis’ health benefits and determined to get into the industry.

Her resume and letters of recommendation would ensure a position with any corporation. But, this is the cannabis industry and to quote Stephanie –“The cannabis industry is the world’s largest startup.”

Stephanie Kronen strategically selected a company that resonated with her values and passion for providing quality products, Curaleaf. Her first position with Curaleaf was developing outreach and an educational program. The industry in Florida was new. Curaleaf had not opened dispensaries in Florida. Physicians had no knowledge of the medical cannabis program. Stephanie went directly to the physicians’ offices providing them with plant education and assisting them with navigating the new arena of medical cannabis. Stephanie moved into the marketing department as the Brand Relationship Manager. Stephanie now holds the position of Director of Marketing  and has been part of the Curaleaf family for five years.

When asked if she has any regrets, Stephanie talks passionately about the patients’ stories that motivate and inspire her every day and Curaleaf’s commitment to the community. It is important to her that Curaleaf is committed to providing patients with the purest and cleanest medical cannabis and that it is a company that puts their patients’ wellness first.

Curaleaf continually explores new ways to understand and better serve their patients. Curaleaf employed The Harris Poll to conduct a survey on the top health and wellness reasons Americans consume cannabis. The findings were recently published in Forbes. She explains how the Curaleaf Rooted in Good  platform addresses Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Equity, and Environmental SustainabilityCuraleaf has launched a pre-roll box with the  Veterans Cannabis Project that contains five small pre-rolls. $1.00 is donated to VCP for every box sold. It is a way we can all give back to Veterans.

Stephanie certainly has no regrets about her career in cannabis.  As part of the companies Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I), she sits on the leadership board of two task forces that focus on improving processes to strengthen Workforce Development and Supplier Diversity.  A favorite guest speaker at industry events, it is always her goal to educate the public on the benefits of medical cannabis and address their questions or concerns. She is a recognized medical cannabis expert for the Florida Health Information Management Association (FHIMA). She is also a published author.

Stephanie’s advice to women wanting a career in the cannabis industry:

“Connect with the community, educate yourself about cannabis, research the company you are applying with, and do what you are passionate about.”

Stephanie Kronen will share her experiences and insights into the cannabis industry on Wednesday, August 24, 6:00 EST on Women Cultivating Success – conversations with women in cannabis, an interactive Zoom meet-up, bring your insights and questions. Hosted by the Women’s Cannabis Chamber of Commerce.

Cannabis industries’ careers and opportunities are not limited to THC rich plants or products. The hemp industry and cannabinoid market are a major part of the cannabis industry. Psychedelics

Psychedelics Industry

Psychedelics Industry is predicted to reach $10.75 billion in the United States by 2027 according to Research and Markets.

Fairfield Market Research has a more conservative forecast of $6330 million in the United States by 2026.

Data Bridge Market Research’s forecast is that the psychedelics industry will be $7,567.52 million in the United States by 2028.

Upwards of $10 billion is likely a more accurate forecast. Like the cannabis boom, the only consistency will be constant change.

One of the largest areas of growth will be in psychedelic therapy and medicine.  In 2017-2018 18% of adults experienced a mental illness. In 2021 19.00%, this is equivalent to over 47 million, of adults reported experiencing a mental illness. 4.55% of adults in the United States reported experiencing a severe mental illness.  Clinical studies indicate that psychedelics can be a powerful and effective treatment for a range of mental health conditions. An extensive 2016 review of medical literature concluded that they “are physiologically safe, with no evidence that they lead to dependence or addiction.” The 2016 review also found benefits for treatment of anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, OCD, PTSD, cluster headaches, personality disorders and psychosis.

There are multiple opportunities in the emerging psychedelic marketplace. Large corporations such as pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson and smaller companies such as Mind Medicine and Numinus Wellness have started to move into the psychedelics marketplace. Canadian Better Plant Sciences is developing a line of mushroom-infused coffee blends. Hollister Biosciences Inc, is using its success with infused cannabis products to produce a line of teas, chocolates and a concentrated powder under the Alphamind brand. Red Light Holland launched a pure truffle product.

Psychedelics IndustrySheva Pekar, the Founder and CEO of PsyCann Advisors, a cannabis and psychedelic consulting company, emphasizes the importance of compliance. The compliance process will be complicated. Requirements, regulations and state mandates will vary with each region.

Sheva Pekar has developed and facilitates the workshop Entering the Emerging Psychedelic Market to give entrepreneurs and therapists information and insights that prepares them for success in the psychedelic market.

“While the industry is still growing, you want to make sure your business fully complies with local and state laws so you can be an official early adopter and lay claim to a successful psychedelic therapy business opportunity.” Sheka Pekar

Psychedelics are the next boom! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the beginning of an industry that has the potential to revolutionize mental health care.

New Mexico

New Mexico Rec Marijuana

New Mexico released the proposed rules for the legal production of recreational marijuana on May 25th, 2021

The proposed rules are based the plant count on a  2019 report by the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). A new study has been commissioned that will provide updated data to determine an appropriate plant count to ensure an adequate supply of medical cannabis. New Mexico has 112,283 medical marijuana patients.

New Mexico has 34 licensed nonprofit vertically integrated MMJ operators, with 123 dispensaries in operation statewide, according to the most recent state data.

The current proposed rules state that “dispensaries shall make a reasonable effort to sell 25% of their monthly cannabis sales to qualified medical marijuana patients or caregivers.” Regulators want the current proposed rules to require that 25% of medical marijuana and 10% of retail be set aside, as well as, reduced licensing fees on medical pot plants. The new legalization does waive taxes on sales of limited quantities of medical marijuana.

There are three types of cultivation licenses being proposed that will allow for 201 up to 4,500. The current plant limit for medical marijuana growers is 1,750.

An annual application process would allow licensees to increase their plant count in increments of 500. A per plant fee of $22 will be charged annually for more than 3,500 mature plants. A $18 per plant fee will be charged on smaller cultivations.

Growers will be required to submit documents verifying water rights and submit to background searches. No cultivation can take place within 300 feet of schools or day-care centers.

Comments can be posted online or submitted directly to the agencies. The deadline to submit public comment is at the conclusion of the public rule hearing on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 9 a.m. The public rule hearing will be held via video conference and telephone.

Los Angeles Social Equity

LA Social Equity

Los Angeles opened the application process for social equity applicants in September 2019.  To date only three of the 200 eligible applicants have received approval from the Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation; Artist Tree, Sunset Business Solutions, and CannaTrust Group.  Artist Tree in Koreatown is the only one that has opened.

The Social Equity Program is a three-tiered program that groups applicants meeting certain criteria and processes their application in a priority schedule created by the City.

Tier 1 Social Equity Individual Applicants must be low-income, and have a prior California Cannabis Arrest or Conviction, or have a minimum cumulative residency of five years in a Disproportionately Impacted Area.

A Tier 2 Social Equity Individual Applicant must be Low Income and have a minimum cumulative residency of five years in a Disproportionately Impacted Area or the individual does not meet the Low Income requirement but has a minimum cumulative residency of ten years in a Disproportionately Impacted Area.

A Tier 3 Applicant is a person who applied for a non-retail cannabis license under another Section of the Code but does not meet the requirements of a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Social Equity Individual Applicant.

The local and state application process is complicated and requires the expertise of attorneys, cannabis consultants, security experts, architects, and other professionals.

Filing fees are around $600 and application fees can cost between $7,000 and $9,000.

The Department of Cannabis Regulation reports that only 46 applicants have uploaded the minimum number of documents required to apply for a cannabis license.

In early 2021, the Los Angeles County Bar Association partnered with the city to provide pro-bono legal assistance to the 200 retail applicants.

The Department of Cannabis Regulation established the Social Equity Entrepreneur Development (SEED) Grant Program. SEED will provide $6 million in financial assistance to the 200 social equity applicants. The first grants will be dispersed in a few months.

The Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation is now hosting webinars on their website. The webinars provide updates and help social equity stakeholders navigate the licensing process.

Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act

Hemp Access

Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act was introduced May 19, 2021 by Oregon’s Democratic senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky.

The FDA declared CBD a drug after the Farm Bill passed. CBD use in consumable products has to be approved on an individual basis with clinical trials. This hinders product development and makes CBD products vulnerable to FDA crackdowns.

“Every day that the FDA drags its feet to update its CBD regulations, hemp farmers are left guessing about how their products will be regulated, and real economic gains for workers and business owners in Oregon and across the country are left on the table,” Merkley said in a statement. “Hemp-derived CBD products are already widely available, and we all need the FDA to issue clear regulations for them just like they do for other foods, drinks, and dietary supplements.

The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act would remove uncertainty by explicitly exempting hemp and all its products from the FDA’s drug-based prohibition.

The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act:

  • Gives hemp-derived CBD products an opportunity to lawfully be used in dietary supplements, foods and beverages under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
  • Prioritizes consumer safety, requiring manufacturers to comply with all existing federal regulations for the products that contain CBD.
  • Ensures that these products are properly labeled.

For a one-page summary of the legislation click here. For the complete Bill text click here.

The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act has support from:

Dawson Hobbs, Executive Vice President, Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America

Jen Daulby, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Consumer Brands Association

Michael McGuffin, President, American Herbal Products Association

Landon's

Sierra Riddle

Landon'sIn September of 2012, Sierra Riddle could not have imagined the direction her life was about to take and that she would be fighting for her son’s life under the scrutiny of national media.

Sierra was a young single mother of a beautiful two year old boy, Landon. Landon had developed a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. The emergency room doctor diagnosed it as a virus and sent him home. Two days later Landon’s armpits were also swollen. “They thought it was either a virus or infection in the lymph nodes, so they gave him some antibiotics.” By day five his groin, abdomen and throat were swollen and he was having trouble breathing. “His whole chest was full of leukemia tumors, which is why he couldn’t breathe,” his mother says.  Landon was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at just 2-years-old.  “They started him on chemo, but told us that he probably wasn’t going to make it. Landon’s cancer had quickly progressed, leading doctors to give him an 8% chance of survival.” Landon was originally given only a 10 percent chance of living through the first two days of treatment.

Doctors put Landon on a four-year treatment plan. The first two months of chemo went fairly well, but then Landon became extremely ill.  He had been prescribed medications like OxyContin and morphine — medications with significant side effects. Landon suffered from stomach failure, and “the OxyContin made him so miserable, when he had hair, he would literally try to pull his hair out.” Sierra watched her toddler becoming dependent on narcotic pain killers. “Around the clock, he was usually on liquid morphine, Ativan, Promethazine,” Sierra told CNN. “And it just really didn’t seem to be helping.”

Sierra was determined to do more than safe her son’s life, she wanted a quality life for Landon. Her journey led her to the Realm of Caring. Landon began with what’s called CBD oil from marijuana containing a very low level THC, the psychoactive ingredient. Wendy Riddle, Landon’s grandmother, says the effects “were almost immediate”.

This is not the end of Sierra’s story, it is the beginning. It is the beginning of a battle that propelled Sierra Riddle into the national spotlight.

She quickly connected with groups of patients and began speaking at local events. Sierra and Landon’s story became part of Dr. Gupta Sanjay’s documentary on Medical Marijuana. Except

Fueled by her passion to provide access to safe, natural cannabis and education to people diagnosed with cancer Sierra became an activist for patients’ rights and sought after national speaker. She was instrumental in the founding of CannaMommy.

CannaMommy Clinic is a free online resource that establishes a bridge between the patient and provider, eliminating the fear of CPS or law enforcement.

Sierra and Landon had moved to Colorado where Landon, who would become the youngest medical marijuana patient in the state, could have access to his medicine.

Landon’s oncology team began reporting Sierra to Child Protective Services for refusing to give Landon chemotherapy despite the documented improvement in his health. She was being accused of medical abuse and neglect. The oncology team was advocating to put Landon in medical foster care in order to resume his chemo treatments. Face to face with the director of CPS, her son’s team of doctors, top administrators from the Children’s Hospital Colorado oncology department and lawyers Sierra began a second battle for her son’s health and well being.

“Listen: Here’s all this chemo you told CPS he cannot live without, and if I didn’t give it to him, he would relapse and die.” Sierra dumped a bag of prescription drugs onto the table.

It had been over a year since Landon had taken the meditation. The doctors’ could not argue his improvement.

“I just want to say, no matter what I am not going to give him chemo, but I’m not going to risk losing him either.  I’m not going to push it that far.”

Sierra was prepared for this battle. Realm of Caring provided the opportunity to educate herself on cannabis and cannabidiol therapies. She relentently sought out every piece of research on cannabis and cannabidiol therapies. Sierra has become known as an expert in Pediatric Cannabis/CBD Therapy and speaks at medical conferences throughout the country.

A passion for providing her son with health coupled with her passion for the plant inspired Landons Health Hut.

“Landon’s Health Hut provides natural and organic CBD health products created right in my own kitchen. As I researched natural and alternative health, it was crazy to me that people thought they had to rely on such harsh pharmaceutical medicines to feel better. They couldn’t recognize the ingredients and they had side effects that were so severe. In the beginning stages, I found old-time remedies that I knew I could enhance with my newfound knowledge of healing.

I used ingredients from my own kitchen and made them into powerful healing agents. And you know what? There was nothing scary about my formulations, because the ingredients were REAL and authentic.”

2019 the first harvest of a boutique strain, Landon’s Legacy from Green Seed Farm. It yielded half a pound as was popular with the patrons of Steve’s Greens Cannabis + Wellness.

“Landon’s Legacy is a high-THC medicinal cannabis strain, and it is something that we are very proud of and have worked on for quite a few years and it will be marketed as a strain that is fantastic for children with a multitude of health issues and terminal illnesses and will always be grown organically,” Sierra Riddle said. “I’m only allowing contracts with dispensaries that are going to do it the right way as well as give back to their local communities there because that’s what it’s all about. Part of my partnership agreement is that they — whoever wants to carry my genetics and have access to all of these amazing things — will donate 10 to 20 percent of those sales for those specific genetics back into my nonprofit, which will then continuously be able to help people in their communities. As well, we are an international nonprofit and so we help families all over the world with plant-based medicine as well as plant-based education.”

“Landon’s Revenge is the second strain, and it’s just about ready to go as sending it across state lines and being ready for a full-blown production grow,” she said. “And that is going to be a high-CBD strain with a healthy amount of CBG, CBN and THC. And that will be also marketed mainly as a safe medication for children with illnesses and everything else but obviously works fantastically for adults as well. It’s just here at Landon’s Health Hut, we like to focus on children with terminal illnesses and life-threatening diseases.”

Sierra Riddle was an ordinary young woman who through her battles evolved into an extraordinary woman shaking things up and making change happen.

Landon's“Landon now is going to celebrate seven years cancer-free this year, which also will mark five years past any medical treatment, which is what the medical community considers cured,” Sierra said. “For Landon, we’ll be cured medically this year, and he is the first and only child to have successfully survived childhood leukemia without the treatment.”
